US Open: Paes, Sania lose in mixed doubles

New York, Sep 4

It was a bad day for India at the US Open Monday as Leander Paes and Sania Mirza lost their respective mixed doubles quarterfinals of the tennis major at the Flushing Meadows here.

Sania partnering Colin Fleming of Britain lost to Czech-Polish pairing of Kveta Peschke and Marcin Matkowski, seeded fourth, 3-6, 5-7 in one hour and nine minutes.

After losing the first set in 25 minutes the Indo-British duo tried fighting back and even broke their opponents' serve following the loss of a service game.

However, another break of serve by the fourth seeds in the last game of the second set meant they advanced to the semifinals.

Third seeds Paes and Elena Vesnina of Russia too lost in straight sets.

Seventh seeds Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak of Czech Republic caused an upset by defeating the Indo-Russian duo (2)6-7, 5-7 in one hour and 43 minutes.

In the junior men's first round, Sumit Nagal lost to Japanese eighth seed Kaichi Uchida 6-4, 1-6, 1-6 in one hour and 52 minutes.

After winning the first set with ease, the Indian could not hold on and gave away the next two sets to the Japanese.
