This summer people are facing a plague of mice, presenting an increased risk of disease.
The increase of refuse in the streets, warmer temperatures throughout the winter and house renovation are all contributing towards escalating numbers of mice, and the numbers are rising at an alarming rate.
Research has shown that mice infestation has risen by 9 percent this year alone, with a rise of 23 percent in London and the South East, affecting homes, businesses and the transport network.
In Farringdon station this week, warnings were issued to passengers to tuck their trousers into their socks following a series of mouse attacks on the platforms and in the tunnels highlighting the severity of the problem.
There is no way of knowing exactly what the number of mice in London or other areas is, but the calls received by pest control company HLA has risen dramatically over the last twelve months, with these calls coming from both commercial establishments as well as homeowners, landlords and tenants.
Central London is especially problematic due to councils putting out rubbish in bin bags rather than wheelie bins, these increase the mouse numbers as they are attracted by the food and waste left lying around.
Regardless of how many traps, poisons and other deterrents people use, it is hard for non professionals to get on top of the problem as there is only so much that these methods will achieve. Mice breed at such a fast rate, that it is difficult to eliminate them completely.
But mice like to move around and spotting one mouse doesn't mean that there are few mice infesting your home, the mice you do see are often males gathering food for a much larger family lurking below.
Mice pose a serious health hazard and spread disease as much as rats do. They urinate continually and so leave a trail of urine and faeces wherever they go -- including food preparation areas, posing a very dangerous health hazard. Mice carry Toxoplasmosis, which is a serious risk to pregnant women.
For commercial establishments, the problem can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage as they can chew through cables disrupting commercial operations as well as the costly repairs required to rectify the damage.
The best way to deal with mice is to call the professionals who will block up any holes and advise of the best way to keep your home a hostile environment for mice. This includes keeping temperatures down, clearing up any food waste and disposing of rubbish hygienically to ensure that you don't attract them in the first place.
