PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Heaping any more praise on Peter Jackson?s The Lord of the Rings trilogy ? based on the J.R.R. Tolkien novel ? the third installment of which won 11 Oscars with each entry earning a billion bucks, would be gilding the lily.
That said, it?s both surprising and disappointing to report that Jackson?s epic fantasy adventure, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ? essentially a prequel to The Lord of the Rings ? is an unexpected clunker, a monumental bore.
Oh, it?s technically accomplished. But there?s no emotional point of entry to the story and no zing to any of the cardboard characters. For anyone who has sat through the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this first installment of yet another trilogy, this one set 60 years earlier, is a dispiriting deja viewing experience.

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit in 1937 for his own children. As for today?s children, let?s hope for the film?s sake that they don?t mind a level of techno-geeky self-indulgence that loses track of just what it is that allows movies to connect with viewers. Because whatever it is, The Hobbit doesn?t have it.
With a more modest scope than its predecessor, it?s the story of title character Bilbo Baggins, the reluctant diminutive hero played by Martin Freeman, who goes on a Middle-earth quest accompanied by thirteen dwarves ? who lack individuality to an absurd degree ? to reclaim both a treasure and the lost dwarf kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.
Ian McKellen returns as the wizard Gandalf, as does Andy Serkis as the CGI creature, Gollum. And returnees Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, and Christopher Lee stop by in a string of glorified cameos. But the magic they collectively conjured in the first trilogy just isn?t there, not by a long shot.
The three-part adaptation that producer, director and co-writer Jackson has concocted with scripters Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro seems to take the approach that anything that can be included should be included.
Uh, bad move.
Director Jackson (King Kong, The Lovely Bones, Heavenly Creatures) shot the film at 48 frames per second, partially to accommodate the 3-D process. That?s twice the normal speed, making this the first theatrical film that isn?t 24 frames per second. And, frankly, so what? From this vantage point, it makes the movie look more like a television soap opera than a feature film.
Worse, it makes some of us wish Jackson had lavished the same kind of painstaking care on story, character, and dialogue values.
When all you find yourself noticing are the sets and the backgrounds and the makeup and the special effects, something is very, very wrong. Even viewing The Hobbit as a pure children?s film, it?s an absolute slog to sit through, well over an hour too long. An hour.
And there are still two features to come over the next two years. Yep, Jackson has transmogrified one little book into three big movies. Talk about hubris. Yikes.
So we?ll expect 2 stars out of 4. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a bloated and tedious down-to-Middle-earth fantasy with much too familiar a Ring to it.

Dec. 14, 2012 ? A new study has revealed we are more honest than you might think. The research by the University of Oxford and the University of Bonn suggests that it pains us to tell lies, particularly when we are in our own homes. It appears that being honest is hugely important to our sense of who we are. However, while it might bother us to tell lies at home, we are less circumspect at work where we are probably more likely to bend the truth, suggests the study.
The researchers conducted simple honesty tests by ringing people in their own homes in Germany and asking them to flip a coin. The study participants were asked over the phone to report on how it landed. The catch to this test was that each of the individuals taking part was given a strong financial incentive to lie without the fear of being found out. The study participants were told that if the coin landed tails up, they would receive 15 euros or a gift voucher; while if the coin landed heads up, they would receive nothing.
Using randomly generated home phone numbers, 658 people were contacted who agreed to take part. Although the researchers could not directly observe the behaviour of the individuals in their own homes, the aggregated reports show a remarkably high level of honesty. Over half of the study participants (55.6 per cent) reported that the coin landed heads-up, which meant they would receive nothing. Only 44.4 per cent reported tails up, collecting their financial reward as a result.
A second similar test was done involving 94 participants over the phone. This time they were asked to report on the results of four consecutive coin tosses with the promise of five euros for every time the coin landed tails up. Despite a potential maximum pay-off of 20 euros, the reports they received from the respondents reflected the likely distribution of a fair coin. This is based on the premise that the coin would have landed tails up around 50 per cent of the time.
All those taking part in the experiments answered questions about their own gender, age, views on honesty and their religious background. The study suggests, however, that personal attributes play no part here as the overall level of honesty demonstrated in both experiments was high.
This latest study can be compared with previous similar studies, which were conducted with students in tightly controlled laboratory situations. In those studies around 75 per cent of participants reported tails-up, which the researchers suggest could infer that people are more honest when they are in their own homes.
Dr Johannes Abeler, from the Department of Economics at the University of Oxford, said: The fact that the financial incentive to lie was outweighed by the perceived cost of lying shows just how honest most people are when they are in their own homes. One theory is that being honest is at the very core of how we want to perceive ourselves and is very important to our sense of self identity. Why it is so important? It may be to do with the social norms we have been given about what is right and wrong from the moment we could walk and talk.
'This study has implications for policy-makers. For instance, if they want to catch those involved in fraudulent behaviour, perhaps the forms and questionnaires could be designed to reveal more about our personal lives and sense of self-identity. Our experiments showed that if people plainly see that to lie in a given situation would be fraudulent, they shy away from it. However, if people are given "wriggle room," they can convince themselves that their behaviour is not fraudulent and this does not attack their sense of who they are.'
The computer-assisted telephone interviews were carried out by the Institute for Applied Social Sciences (infas), a private, well-known German research institute. They were conducted between November 2010 and February 2011. Telephone numbers were selected using a random digit dialling technique with numbers randomly based on a data set of all potential landline telephone numbers in Germany. Part of the study consisted of questions relating to the participants' social background, age and education, their economic and political preferences, their religious beliefs, their attitudes to crime, and their beliefs about other people's behaviour in the experiment.

THURSDAY, Dec. 13 (HealthDay News) ? Postmenopausal breast cancer survivors are at increased risk for developing diabetes and should be screened for the disease more closely, a new study suggests.
Researchers analyzed data from 1996 to 2008 from the province of Ontario, Canada, to determine the incidence of diabetes among nearly 25,000 breast cancer survivors aged 55 or older and nearly 125,000 age-matched women without breast cancer.
During a median follow-up of more than five years, nearly 10 percent of all the women in the study developed diabetes. Compared to those who had not had breast cancer, the risk of diabetes among breast cancer survivors was 7 percent higher two years after cancer diagnosis and 21 percent higher 10 years after cancer diagnosis, the investigators found.
The risk of diabetes, however, decreased over time among breast cancer survivors who had undergone chemotherapy. Their risk compared to women without breast cancer was 24 percent higher in the first two years after cancer diagnosis and 8 percent higher 10 years after cancer diagnosis, according to the study, which was published Dec. 12 in the journal Diabetologia.
?It is possible that chemotherapy treatment may bring out diabetes earlier in susceptible women,? study author Dr. Lorraine Lipscombe, of Women?s College Hospital and Women?s College Research Institute in Toronto, said in a journal news release. ?Increased weight gain has been noted [after receiving] chemotherapy for breast cancer, which may be a factor in the increased risk of diabetes in women receiving treatment.?
?Estrogen suppression as a result of chemotherapy may also promote diabetes,? Lipscombe added. ?However, this may have been less of a factor in this study where most women were already postmenopausal.?
The study authors suggested that there may be other factors involved for women who received chemotherapy, including glucocorticoid drugs, which are used to treat nausea in patients receiving chemo and are known to cause spikes in blood sugar. In addition, breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy are monitored more closely and thus are more likely to have diabetes detected, they noted.
The researchers said it is unclear why diabetes risk increased over time among breast cancer survivors who did not receive chemotherapy.
?There is, however, evidence of an association between diabetes and cancer, which may be due to risk factors common to both conditions,? Lipscombe said. ?One such risk factor is insulin resistance, which predisposes to both diabetes and many types of cancer ? initially insulin resistance is associated with high insulin levels and there is evidence that high circulating insulin may increase the risk of cancer.?
?However, diabetes only occurs many years later when insulin levels start to decline,? she said. ?Therefore, it is possible that cancer risk occurs much earlier than diabetes in insulin-resistant individuals, when insulin levels are high.?
Overall, the ?findings support a need for closer monitoring of diabetes among breast cancer survivors,? Lipscombe concluded.
Although the study found an association between diabetes and breast cancer, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

DUBAI (Reuters) - The United States, Britain and Canada on Thursday refused to sign a new global telecommunications treaty, warning it would provide a mandate for governmental regulation of the Internet, potentially ending 11 days of fractious talks in Dubai.
In pre-written statements, the three countries informed a summit of the International Telecommunications Union of their decision, with Denmark, the Netherlands, and Kenya making similar announcements.
The summit chairman broke up the meeting for an hour of private negotiations to try and revive the treaty, but with the United States announcing a press conference at 1900 GMT it seems Washington is in no mood for compromise.
"It's with a heavy heart and a sense of missed opportunities that the U.S. must communicate that it's not able to sign the agreement in the current form," said Terry Kramer, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. body.
"The Internet has given the world unimaginable economic and social benefit during these past 24 years. All without U.N. regulation."
The United States and its allies have fought to ensure the new treaty, which is being revised for the first time since 1988, only applies to traditional telecommunications.
A large bloc of countries led by Russia supports adding language to the treaty that could open the door to more regulation of cyberspace on issues from spam, security and the assignment of addresses to web pages.
The U.S. bloc's coordinated snub followed a vote that approved an African proposal to add a sentence in a treaty relating to human rights.
Western delegates believe this effectively reintroduced a contentious proposal that said no country should be allowed to unilaterally deny another country access to communications networks.
"We prefer no resolution on the Internet at all and I'm extremely concerned that the language just adopted opens the possibility of Internet and content issues," Simon Towler, head of the British delegation, said after the Africa proposal was passed.
The treaty was scheduled to be signed at 1330 GMT on Friday.
