Multiple Myeloma Cancer is Triggered By Mutated Genes, Say ...

A recent study has found that mutated genes trigger cancer in almost 33% of the multiple myeloma cancer patients. The study was conducted by researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). It is believed that the findings of the study could improve the diagnosis and treatment of multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma is cancer which is located in the bone marrow. A person affected with this particular cancer may show symptoms of anemia, weaken immune system and unusual bleeding. It is considered to me most aggressive form of cancer.

In the US, it is estimated that every year about 4,000 patients are diagnosed with it. The cancer is aggressive in nature, so much so that even intense treatment fails in increasing the life expectancy of the patients. A patient infected with the cancer lives for maximum of five years after being diagnosed with it.

According to the study, the family members of the multiple myeloma cancer patients have four times higher chances of developing the cancer. Although it is known that multiple myeloma cancer is transmitted from one generation to other, it is for the very first time when researchers have claimed to have found genome responsible for triggering it.

For the study, the researchers compared the DNA of 1,675 multiple myeloma cancer patients with the DNA of 5,900 healthy people. During the study, the researchers found two genomes which were present in almost all the multiple myeloma cancer patients.

While acknowledging the findings of the study, Eric Low, Chief Executive of Myeloma UK, said, ?Understanding the biological and genetic basis for the onset and progression of myeloma is extremely important and will lead to better screening, earlier diagnosis and treatment in the future?. It is hoped that soon the researchers would be able to find a cure of the deadly cancer.
